Terrorist Attacks: ISIS in Paris
On November 13, 2015, a radical terrorist group derived from Iraq and Syria, known as ISIS, set in motion a series of deathly attacks in Paris. Consequently, these violent acts resulted in a total death toll of 130 people, and 368 left injured. Initially, 3 suicide bombers terrorized the northern suburb of St. Denis, aggression continued with mass shooting throughout the cities cafes and restaurants. Subsequently, the terrorist attacks were finalized with a devastating bombing of the Bataclan Theatre during a concert. Numerous people were taken hostage and 89 lives were taken as a result. According to multiple sources, ISIS takes full responsibility, claiming that the reasoning behind the attacks were in retaliation against the French airstrikes in Syria and Iraq.
This is an attack not just on Paris… It’s an attack on all of humanity and the universal values we share.
Through media, the world became immediately aware of the devastating attacks, and expressed support, love and sorrow for all affected. On social media, the hashtag #prayforparis spread instantaneously as a globally recognized sign of condolances. Throughout the world, landmarks were illuminated with the colours of the French flag, as internationalist recognition became increased. Not only did these attacks affect France, it impacted the entire world. Internationalism is shown through the outreach responses and actions of all nations throughout this affair. The world came together in total solidarity to support France and fight for counterterrorism. For the majority, our world together has grown from these attacks to exceed to an nationalistic point of democracy for one another regardless of race, country, religion or beliefs.

An artist’s heartfelt symbol of peace became a worldwide sign of support for France. The illustration is powerful in its simplicity: A peace symbol with the Eiffel tower. French graphic designer Jean Jullien created the image, “Peace for Paris.” The world embraced it almost immediately. It has become a way of saying, We are with you, France, and we are not afraid. This symbol which has been shared around the world relates directly to nationalism. It shows that the world stands in solidairity. This is a positive expression of worldwide nationalism in response to a negative event.
